Concept Album

Rockford's Rock Opera is the first in an exciting new generation of Concept Albums. It's an adventure in sound of all adults and children. Just press play below, it's free and it's like nothing you'll ever have heard before.

In popular music, a concept album is an album which is unified by a theme, which can be instrumental, compositional, narrative, or lyrical.

Concept Albums are most often pre-planned and with all songs contributing to a single overall theme or unified story, this plan or story being the concept.

Rockford's Rock Opera is a new breed of conceptual album and in fact, in the way the story and music faithfully join together it more of a true concept album than many other, so called, concept albums.

Sgt. Pepper, The Beatles supposed 'concept album' was nothing of the sort according to John Lennon, the concept of that 'concept album' having been abandoned by The Beatles by the third song of side one.

By the late 1970's the concept album excesses of that decade (featuring concept albums by the likes of Rick Wakeman and Rush) led to the words 'concept album' being viewed with some suspicion. However, coming right up to date recent albums by The Streets and Rockford's Rock Opera have now brought the term 'concept album' back in from the cold!

The Butterfly Ball

Roger Glover's Butterfly Ball from the early 1970's was certainly and inspiration for Rockford's Rock Opera. The Butterfly Ball was a collection of songs based on the drawings of artist Alan Aldridge. Roger Glover and Friends went on to play The Butterfly Ball live at the ALbert Hall in London and the fabulous song 'Love is All' was a hit in Europe. With some suprising guest stars on the album, The Butterfly Ball is well worth getting hold of.

The Point

I only discovered The Point by Harry Nillsen after working with keyboard player, Nick Rhodes on Rockford's Rock Opera. He remembered 'The Point' album as a child... and what a hippy classic it is. With some excellent songs, narration by the Nilssen himself and a suitably postive story line, The Point is another sadly missed classic concept piece that inspired our own concept album.
