As lovers and exponents of screen-free entertainment for kids, we’re often sent information from organisations providing information regarding screen time, especially for parents concerned regarding the amount of time children now spend with screens, at school, and at home. With this in mind, we’re now sharing information about MyVision.

Should I worry about screen time?

MyVision, is a free digital resource led by expert ophthalmologists and optometrists to provide trusted information on eye health and vision.

In today’s modern world of technology, it is important to consider the negative effects of extended screen time on the eyes, minds, and bodies of children. To educate the public on this, we recently published a guide to screen time for parents, where we cover the following:

– Problems screens can cause
– How to develop screen time rules
– Suggested screen time limits by age
– Teaching and encouraging digital literacy, and more.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the following amounts of screen time for children of different ages:

AgeRecommended Screen Time
Under 18 monthsNone, except for video calls with an adult present
18 to 24 monthsOnly educational content under adult supervision
2 to 5 yearsOne hour of non-educational screen time on weekdays and up to three hours on weekends
Over 6 yearsLimit specific screen-based activities, such as video games, instead of overall screen time. Encourage an activity that does not involve screen time.
